An Introduction to Cat 6
What is Cat 6? Cat 6 is the generic term for structured cabling systems with a bandwidth of 250MHz.
How does this differ from Cat 5e and Cat 7? Cat 5e systems are specified up to 100MHz and Cat 7 systems are specified up to 600MHz.
What can I use Cat 6 cabling for? Cat 6 cabling systems can be used to transmit a wide variety of analogue and digital signals, including, but not limited to, voice, ISDN and high speed data, including Gigabit Ethernet.
Why should I specify and install Cat 6? Cat 6 solutions give much higher potential performance than Cat 5e solutions although no applications have yet been developed to exploit this performance. Potential future applications include a low cost Gigabit Ethernet that will use just two pairs instead of all four that have to be used in Cat 5e. The benefit of this is that it will bring down the cost of the active devices, thus offsetting the higher cost of the cabling solution. End users are specifying Cat 6 in order to give an element of future proofing that should mean that the cabling system will have a longer life than a Cat 5e installation.
What is the difference between Class E and Cat 6? Classes are used by the European (EN50173) and International (ISO/IEC11801) standards to define the performance of cabling systems. Both of these standards use Categories to define the performance of components to be used in those cabling systems. Just to confuse matters the Americans (TIA/EIA 568B) use Categories to define the performance of both systems and components.
Why is this important? Because of the way in which the performance is specified it is possible, using high performance components to achieve Class E system performance using Cat 5e components.
Why is this a problem? Systems that are built up in this way have limitations, particularly in interoperability (the option to use components from different manufacturers), backwards compatibility (the assurance that the system performance is at least as good as the poorest performing component within the system) and the number of connections that can be used.
What are most manufacturers doing? Most manufacturers are offering solutions based on system performance for the Channel. This means that all of the components that are used in the system must be purchased from the same manufacturer and the Channel configuration must be tested with that manufacturers patch cords.
